    BARRIERS ENCOUNTERED BY EFL STUDENTS IN LEARNING SYNTAX AT FIFTH SEMESTER IN ENGLISH DEPARTMENT OF SORONG MUHAMMADIYAH UNIVERSITY

    This research aimed to describe kinds of barrier encountered by EFL students in learning Syntax at Fifth Semester in  English Language Education Department of Universitas Muhammadiyah Sorong. This research used a qualitative method in the form of a descriptive qualitative design. 6 students as were as participants of this research. The participants were taken using purposive sampling through the criteria: students had difficulty in learning syntax. An interview was done to gather research data. Before conducting the research, Pre-Interview and Pre-Participation Observation in the Syntax Class to find out Students’ that have difficulties in learning Syntax were done. After that, the semi-structured interview used to know the barriers encountered by these students. Based on the data gained, the result of this research found that the students’ barrier in learning Syntax in English Language Education Department of Universitas Muhammadiyah Sorong were an emotional barrier, motivation barrier, and learning disability. From those of three barriers, most of the students tended to have fear, shame and emotional sensitivity as a most encountered barrier. Another barrier was motivation barrier such as Procrastination and Learning Environment, in addition to learning disability like depression, and dysgraphia. There are two kinds of Barrier that have not encountered by students, they are Lack of Prioritization and Dyslexia. Key words: Barriers, Learning Syntax &nbsp

    Pengembangan E-Modul Basic Grammar in Use berorientasi Model Drill and Practice menggunakan Quizizz

    Bahan ajar sebagai salah satu media utama dalam melakukan proses belajar mengajar dituntut mengikuti perkembangan teknologi yang semakin pesat. Sehingga bahan ajar E-modul menjadi perlu untuk dikembangkan guna meningkatkan pemahaman peserta didik sesuai dengan zamannya. Pengembangan bahan ajar berupa E-modul dengan model Drill and practice menggunakan Quizizz, memungkinkan pengalaman belajar peserta didik lebih menarik. Pengalaman tersebut memungkinkan siswa memahami materi lebih baik. Berdasar pada hal tersebut, penelitian R & D dengan Model 4D (Define, Design, Develop dan Disseminate) dilakukan dengan tujuan mengembangkan Bahan Ajar E-Modul ini dengan model Drill and Practice untuk mata kuliah Basic Grammar in Use pada program studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris FKIP UM Sorong dan mengetahui kelayakannya, penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa Pengembangan Bahan Ajar berhasil dilakukan dengan memperoleh kelayakan pada kategori sangat baik dengan rata-rata 3.8 oleh ahli mater, 3.7 oleh ahli media dan 3.2 atas respon siswa.     Understanding the Function of Present Perfect Tense through EGRA Implementation in EFL Classroom

    This study focused on investigating the effectiveness of EGRA (Experience, Generalization, Reinforcement, Application) technique implementation in improving the ability of college students at London School English Center to understand the usage of the present perfect tense. The study used a true Experimental method with a pretest-posttest control group design. The population was all the college students studied in London school. It was 45 students. The sample was taken using random sampling. It was 24 students divided into two classes. The experimental group was 12 and the rest 12 students were as the control group. The N-gain calculation was used to know the effectiveness of the EGRA implementation in improving students' ability to understand the usage of the present perfect tense. The N-gain result showed I percentage mean. The calculation result showed 65.45 %. It meant that the implementation of EGRA techniques reached the Effective Enough category. It was revealed that the use of EGRA technique was effective enough to enhance the students 'understanding of the usage of the present perfect tense. While the result of N-gain for Control group was 21.41% mean. It showed that the application of the conventional method (Explanation and practicing) was not effective in improving students' ability to understand the usage of the present perfect tense

    Strategi Kesopanan Berbahasa Yang Digunakan Oleh Penghuni Kos

    Setiap orang selalu berbagi ide, perhatian dan minat setiap hari dengan orang sekitar. Orang melakukan interaksi sosial dengen Orang lain menggunakan Bahasa yang sesuai. Bahkan keberhasilan interaksi social ditentukan oleh beberapa syarat dalam prosessnya. Salah satunya adalah kesopanan berbahasa dalam percakapan antar sesama. Penelitain ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui strategi kesopanan jenis apa sajakah yang digunakan oleh penghuni rumah kos BPJS dalam berinteraksi social setiap hari. Penelitian ini akan dilakukan di sebuah rumah kos yang dihuni oleh enam mahasiswi yang bersuku Bugis dengan berbagai usia (18-25 tahun) yang tinggal Bersama. Demi mecapai tujuan tersebut, penelitian deskriptif kualitatif digunakan dengan mengumpulkan data melalui rekaman percakapn sehari-hari yang lakukan oleh ke-enam penghuni asrama dalam interaksi social. Melalui analisis percakapan dengan eksplorasi analitik telah ditemukan empat jenis strategi yang digunakan oleh penghuni kos, yaitu; Bald on Record, kesopanan positif, kesopanan negatif, dan Off Recorddengan dua sub-strategi untuk setiap strategi. Diantaranya; ucapan langsung, penawaran, optimis, janji, pesimis, lindung nilai, ucapan ambigu dan ironis. ABSTRACTEveryday, people share idea, intention and interest through language with other people. They do social interaction each other or one another in appropriate speech. To be successful in social interaction, people need to consider such requirements inorder to make good interaction.One of the requirements is politeness in using language in conversation.This research aimed to find out the types of politeness strategy used by people at boarding house. This research was conducted in a boarding house that consist of Bugis people and various age (16 to 25 years old) called BPJS. The design of this research was descriptive qualitative. The data was collected through voice recorder to gain the politeness strategy used by the people in the boarding house in their daily social interaction.The data was analyzed using conversational analysis which is required to the analytic exploration. Based on the data analysis, it was concluded four Kinds of Politenss strategies used by Boarding House BPJS occupants, they are bald on record, positive strategy, negative strategy, and off record. Eevery kind of politeness strategy used has some kinds of sub strategy. They are Necessary, Offer Something, Optimistic, Promises, Pessimistic, Question & Hedge, Ironic Espression and Ambiguous Expression.

    Teachers’ Pedagogical Competence in Teaching English as Foreign Language

    This research aims to find out how the pedagogical competence of teachers in learning English as a foreign language at MTs. Negeri Model Sorong City. The theory that the researchers examined as the basis of this research was the concept of pedagogic competence, definition of teacher, the objective of pedagogic competence, teaching and learning English as foreign language, the objective of learning English, and teacher classroom management. The research was conducted at MTs Negeri Model Sorong City 2022. The approach used was a qualitative with descriptive methods. Data collection techniques used were interviews and questionnaires. The instrument in this research was the researchers themselves assisted by some colleagues assisted by using interview guidelines, questionnaires sheet, and recording devices. The role in the research was the researchers themselves, some students, and English teachers at the school. The result of this research shows that the English teachers’ pedagogical competence was good enough quality. It was shown that the teachers fulfill the scope of the pedagogical competence of the teachers. This is also supported by the acquisition of percentage or average results from questionnaire data 8.9% in aspect of understanding of students, 10.2% in aspect of learning planning, 10.6% in aspect implementation of educative and dialogical learning, 5.8% in aspect utilization technology of learning, 9.5% in aspect evaluation of learning outcomes, 7.3% in aspect development of student potential, 10,7% in aspect understanding of education insights or foundations, and 9.9% in aspect development of curriculum or syllabus

    Pendampingan Pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris Bagi Siswa SMPN 1 Saonek Raja Ampat

    Berdasar pada data observasi awal, sebagai Sekolah yang hanya memiliki satu guru Bahasa Inggris Aktif dan kurangnya motivasi belajar Bahasa Inggris siswa di SMP N 01 Saonek menjadi salah satu alasan pelaksanaan Program Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat (PkM) ini. Program ini dilaksanakan dalam tiga bentuk kegiatan yaitu penyuluhan pendidikan, mengajar bahasa Inggris di sekolah dan English fun day. Program ini bertujuan menumbuhkan motivasi belajar bahasa Inggris siswa SMP N 1 Saonek Raja Ampat. Seluruh siswa sekolah menjadi  peserta dalam program ini, 43 siswa yang tersebar di tiga tingkatan kelas. Diantaranya 13 siswa di Kelas 1, 15 siswa di Kelas 2 dan 15 siswa di kelas 3. Program ini dilaksanakan oleh dosen bersama 25 mahasiswa program studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris Fakultas Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan Universitas Muhammadiyah Sorong. Penyuluhan pendidikan merupakan salah satu bentuk agenda pembuka yang bertujuan memberikan penjelasan dan pemahaman kepada peserta didik tentang pentingnya mempelajari bahasa Inggris.  Program kedua adalah mengajar bahasa Inggris setiap hari di sekolah. Terakhir, English fun day yang diadakan setiap sore hari di sekitar pantai. Hasil dari program pengabdian ini menunjukkan bahwa program ini cukup berhasil dilihat dari antusiasme peserta didik selama mengikuti program-program yang telah disebutkan diatas. Antusiasme partisipasi aktif dari peserta didik ini menunjukkan adanya peningkatan motivasi belajar Bahasa Inggris yang tadinya kurang tertarik hingga akhirnya tertarik belajar bahasa Inggris. Selain itu, program ini juga sangat bermanfaat bagi mahasiswa dalam dalam mempraktekkan ilmu yang dipelajari dalam perkuliahan

    LANGUAGE LEARNING STRATEGIES EMPLOYED BY SUCCESSFULL STUDENTS IN DEVELOPING ENGLISH-SPEAKING PERFORMANCE

    This research aimed to discover the language learning strategies used by successfull students in developing speaking performance in speaking performance at English Language Education Program in Universitas Muhammadiyah Sorong. This research used qualitative method in the form of descriptive qualitative. the participants of this research were taken from the third semester of English Language Education Program in Universitas Muhammadiyah Sorong with the total 6 students. The participants were the students who gained score A in speaking class. Based on the data gathered, the result showed that the students applied both of Direct and Imdirect learning strategies in developing their speaking English Language Education Program in Universitas Muhammadiyah Sorong, namely social strategies, metacognitive strategies, affective strategies in Indirect Strategy and memory strategies, cognitive strategies, and compensation strategies in Direct Strategy. From those of six strategies applied, most of the students tended to apply Indirect Strategy that was social strategies by asking help, working in pair, practicing with the proficient user of English and making small group discussion

    Students’ Sensory referred on Learning Styles at English Education Department of Universitas Muhammadiyah Sorong

    This research aims to find out the students’ sensory preferred on learning style in learning English at English Department of Sorong Muhammadiyah University. Learning styles is a part of human being. Every person has an individual learning style. Individuals in learning has a variety of ways, some learned by listening, some learned by reading, and each students bring their own style to the classroom. Similarity, just as the learners learn in different ways, so also lecturer teach in different ways. This research was conducted in English Department of Universitas Muhammadiyah Sorong, the researcher took the representative of two classes at fifth semester. The researcher use questionnaire and Interview to find out the students’ sensory preferred learning style in learning English. The researchers found that the result of interview students dominant used visual learning style and 28.2% of participants is visual learners. However, visual learners were majority, the lecturer also discovered that students were able to receive the information when the lecturer delivered the information in auditory or kinesthetic way. The researchers found that language learning style between result interview and questionnaire were same. Visual learners are minority. In this case, the teacher needs to help students when they feel hard to understand.     Pendampingan Pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris bagi Anak Asuh di Panti Asuhan Putri Muhammadiyah Al-Amin Kota Sorong

    Pentingnya penguasaan bahasa asing sebagai salah satu bahasa internasional yang mampu menjadi penunjang dalam dunia kerja menjadi salah satu hal yang dibutuhkan oleh manusia di zaman penuh teknologi ini. Hasil observasi awal di Panti Asuhan Putri Muhammadiyah Al-Amin Kota Sorong, seluruh anak asuh di panti tersebut masih memiliki kemampuan Bahasa Inggris yang lemah. Kegiatan pemberdayaan melalui Bimbingan Belajar Bahasa Inggris telah dilakukan selama kurang lebih tiga bulan melalui kegiatan Pengabdian pada Masyarakat Kuliah Kerja Nyata (PPM KKN). Tahapan kegiatan tersebut telah dilakukan mulai dari persiapan, analisis kebutuhan, penyusunan silabus dan jadwal, pelaksanaan pre tes, pelaksanaan bimbingan belajar, pos tes hingga penjajakan kerja sama antar lembaga. Hasil luaran kegiatan ini adalah satu pengetahuan peserta belajar telah meningkat yaitu kemampuan dasar Bahasa Inggris peserta mencapai target, yaitu lebih dari 50% siswa yang memperoleh nilai dengan kategori baik (71 %) dan 19 % siswa dengan perolehan kategori sangat baik.Ă‚
